Take Onslaught, for example: Jacen and Anakin are searching for meaning in their lives. Luke and Corran are looking to stem the tied of an outside invasion which would cost everyone their freedom, while at the same time having to impose control over the Jedi... It is very easy to suggest that genre fiction is nothing more than escapist, and a lot of it does run rather light on the classical ideas encompassed by theme. We talk, by phone, at conventions, by email, and have the folks at LucasFilm or the publisher directing us toward things. It works fairly well, being able to engineer handoffs from one author to another. Stephen King and Tom Clancy get $10 million a book. The average first SF novel gets an advance of $3k, and does earn anotehr cent. Writing is a career, not a lottery ticket. I've had novels coming out since 1988, and make a decent living. By the same token, I'll make about half, this year, of what I did last... OR, if I make a new book deal, I might make even more... Not a career for folks who don't like al ittle risk... and who are not too proud to know that if they fail, they're looking at Fast Food Service for a new career...
